CA Dream Act Update -- Oct. 8th 2011

The California Dream Act (AB 131) was signed earlier today by Governor Jerry Brown. This is a victory for California. This state will lead by example in hopes that other states and the federal government will follow in its footsteps. The SFV Dream Team is celebrating this exciting news and we hope you will all join us in this celebration. Let's continue this fight and achieve our ultimate goal, the Federal DREAM Act.

We would like to thank all the DREAMers, allies, supporters and those legislators who championed the bill through the lengthy process in Sacramento. Thank you all, We did it!

"Conozca sus derechos" / "Know your rights"

SFVDT along with Hermandad Mexicana, Pueblo y Salud, and Mary Immaculate church participated in a forum. The Forum educated the community in the San Fernando Valley about their rights as immigrants. The community had the chance to ask questions regarding citizenship and current immigration laws. This forum was one of many that SFVDT and other organizations will be offering at Mary Immaculate Church to get the community involved.

SFVDT outreach students at East Valley High School

On Wednesday, May 25, SFVDT was present at East Valley High School career day to create awareness about the Federal and the CA DREAM ACT. Students, teachers, and administrators responded with great excitement to our visit. They expressed their full support for the Dream Act and assure us they will follow the Dream Act closely. With this resounding support from East Valley High School, SFVDT commitment to High School dreamers is stronger than ever.

Fuentes Is Committed to Taking AB 131 Out of Appropriations

"...the good news is that my committee, myself, the speaker, my committee members, all of the democrats in the State Assembly and the Senate are supportive of this measure, so this bill will get out of the appropriations committee because it has in the past when I've chaired the committee and it most certainly will and I am absolutely committed to doing that again"

- Felipe Fuentes May 14th at the CA Dream Act Town Hall in the San Fernando Valley

CA Dream Act Town Hall

The California Dream Team Alliance (CADTA) came together to host a town hall in the San Fernando Valley. The Valley became the center of attention as the chairman of appropriations committee, Felipe Fuentes, also represents the east Valley. AB 131, a crucial part of the CA Dream Act, is on suspension file and has until May 27th to get out of appropriations.
The Town Hall consisted of a panel who answered audience questions and dreamers who told their stories.
